RONGAI ROUTE 6 DAYS

Day 1Drive to Rongai Gate.  Climb through the rain forest to 1st Cave  (5750ft/1800m) about 3 hours.  Overnight at 1st Cave (camping).
Day 2Leave the forest and passing to 2nd Cave.  Dinner and overnight at 2nd Cave.  About 3 ho
Day 3Leave the forest and passing to 3rd Cave (12,000ft/3800m).  Overnight at 3rd Cave (camping).  About 4 hours.
Day 4Continue ascending to Kibo Hut, at 15,000fr/4700m.  Overnight at Kibo Hut (camping).  About 4 hours.
Day 5Very early start for the summit on steep and heavy scree up to Gilman’s Point (5686m) which is on the crater rim. Continue around the rim (which will take about two hours if you are fit) to Uhuru Peak (5895m) the highest place in all Africa.  Descend to Kibo Hut for tea and biscuits or soup and then down to Horombo Hut.
Day 6Descend to Marangu Gate.  Drive to the hotel for hot showers, dinner and a warm bed.

Extra day -  Rongai route
This is normally spent at 3rd Cave.

Day 1Drive to Rongai Gate.  Climb through the rain forest to Simba Camp.  Dinner and overnight at Simba Camp site
Day 2Leave Simba Camp passing 3rd Case to Kikelelwa Camp.  Dinner and overnight at Kikelelwa Camp
Day 3Leave Kikelewa Camp to Mwenzi Turn Hut.  Dinner and overnight at Mawenzi Turn Hut.
Day 4From Mawenzi Turn Hut to Kibo Hut
